Horn Dance

There are few animals more iconic of Scotland, and Celtic culture in general, than the Highland Stag – the Red Deer. This noble beast was not only an important source of food, clothing and tool-making materials but was also revered as a spiritual animal, influencing Celtic thought for thousands of years. It is only natural that it quickly found its way into art - cave paintings showing the deer date from as early as 40,000 years ago.

Often linked to the power of the Other World and untamed nature, the Highland Stag is an emblem of the regenerative and cyclical pattern of nature - the stag’s antlers fall off in winter, only to grow back the following year, not unlike the trees that they resemble.
